Intent
At Stock C of E primary we believe that a quality English curriculum should develop children’s love of reading, writing and discussion. The acquisition of language skills is of the upmost importance to us and therefore the teaching of all aspects of English is given a high priority within school. We believe that confidence in basic language skills enables children to communicate creatively and imaginatively, preparing them for their future journey through education and beyond.
It is our intent that children can read easily, fluently and with good understanding. We recognise the importance of phonics in the early teaching of reading and this is continued throughout the school. Our pupils are encouraged to read for pleasure and to read widely. By developing the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information the children will acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language. Strategies are taught which enable our children to become independent and resilient learners, building stamina when reading across the curriculum.
In years 2 and 4 Reading Gladiators club is offered to challenge and broaden reading skills and genre. Fun at story time club is offered to EYFS. Each week the children are read a story and complete fun activities related to the book.
