Reading
Vision Statement and Curriculum Intent
At Stock, we believe that every child has the potential to let their light shine through reading. Our aim is to nurture confident, enthusiastic readers who develop a lifelong love of books and the skills to access the wider curriculum and the world beyond. Through our core values of Affinity, Aspire, and Achieve, we ensure that all children feel supported, inspired, and successful in their reading journey.
We intend to:
-
Foster a love of reading so that children choose to read for pleasure and enjoyment.
-
Ensure all pupils develop fluent, confident reading skills through a consistent and structured approach.
-
Provide a broad, diverse, and ambitious range of texts that reflect different cultures, experiences, and perspectives.
-
Close gaps quickly so that all children, regardless of background, can succeed.
-
Build strong foundations in phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and oracy.
-
Encourage children to aspire by exposing them to high-quality literature that sparks imagination and curiosity.
Through Affinity, we create a supportive reading community; through Aspire, we inspire a passion for literature; and through Achieve, we enable every child to succeed.
Implementation
Reading is taught through a carefully sequenced and structured approach. Lessons are broken into clear, manageable chunks that support all learners.
We achieve this by
-
Delivering a systematic, high-quality phonics programme from Early Years through Key Stage 1 using the Little Wandles systematic phonic scheme.
-
Providing daily guided reading or whole-class reading sessions focused on fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and discussion.
-
Ensuring all children read regularly at school and at home, supported by strong partnerships with parents and carers.
-
Carefully selecting high-quality, diverse texts across the curriculum to promote engagement and inclusion.
-
Creating a language-rich environment.
-
Supporting children who need extra help through targeted interventions and timely assessment.
-
Encouraging reading for pleasure through storytime, author studies, book events, and reading challenges.
Impact
By the time pupils leave Stock,
Pupils will:
-
Develop into confident, fluent readers who enjoy a range of texts.
-
They are able to decode words accurately and demonstrate a strong understanding of what they have read.
-
They can read with increasing expression.
-
Pupils build a rich vocabulary and use this to support comprehension and writing.
-
They can discuss texts thoughtfully, make predictions and explain their ideas using evidence.
-
Data shows that by the end of each key stage, most pupils meet or exceed age-rerelated expectations and those who need additional support make strong progress through targeted intervention.
