PE

Vision for PE at Stock

Our PE curriculum nurtures confident, curious and healthy learners who let their light shine through physical skill, teamwork and personal growth. Grounded in our values Affinity, Aspire, Achieve, PE creates sporting community, inspires ambition and resilience, and secures measurable progress and excellence.

Intent
We design PE to deliver the statutory aims of the UK Primary National Curriculum: KS1 pupils will master basic movements, develop balance, agility and co-ordination and begin to apply these in a range of activities; KS2 pupils will use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and combination, develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance, and play competitive games modified as needed. Our intent is to:

  • Build progressive knowledge, vocabulary and physical skills (using the Knowledge & Skills and Vocabulary Progression frameworks) so pupils gain confidence and mastery year-on-year.
  • Foster inclusion and belonging so every child participates and develops (Affinity).
  • Stretch pupils to set and pursue personal and collective goals, developing aspiration, perseverance and leadership (Aspire).
  • Secure demonstrable outcomes in skill, understanding and wellbeing so pupils achieve physical literacy and lifelong activity (Achieve).

Implementation Curriculum design

  • At Stock, we utilise a scheme for PE called 'Get Set 4 PE'
  • Our Long Term Progression Map ensures coverage of NC strands (Fundamentals, Games, Athletics, Gymnastics, Dance, OAA, Swimming, Fitness, Yoga, Striking & Fielding, Net & Wall, Target) with at least one unit per strand each year.
  • Sequence learning via the Knowledge & Skills Progression ladders and Vocabulary Progression pyramids: we key terms in EYFS/KS1, deepen technical language and tactical knowledge through KS2, and revisit to secure retention and oracy.
  • Lessons follow a clear learning objective, warm-up, skill development, application in progressively complex contexts (individual, partner, small group, whole class), and reflection/evaluation using taught vocabulary and success criteria.
  • Differentiation through task, equipment, space and outcome to meet needs of all pupils, including SEND and EAL, with adapted success criteria and adult support.
  • Formative assessment using skill ladders and vocabulary milestones;
  • Provide clear pathways for extra-curricular development (clubs, competitions, leadership roles), linking school-based progress to wider opportunities.
  • Use appropriate equipment, facilities and, for swimming, comply with NC requirement to provide swimming instruction in KS2 and focus on survival, stroke and safety outcomes.

Impact

  • Our children demonstrate progressive competence across NC strands: increasing control, technique and tactical understanding (evidenced by progression ladders and end-of-year judgements).
  • Use accurate PE vocabulary to describe skills, tactics and performance
  • Show improved physical health, confidence and social skills: teamwork, leadership, resilience and fair play
  • Increased participation in PE and extra-curricular sport, improved pupil wellbeing and clear progression into inter-school opportunities.
  • Our PE is inclusive and narrows progress gaps - every child has the chance to let their light shine.
