Vision Statement and Curriculum Intent
At Stock, our Art and Design curriculum aims to nurture pupils’ creativity and imagination, encouraging them to think and work like artists and designers. Rooted in our school vision, “Let our light shine,” We want every child to feel confident to share their ideas, be proud of their work, do their very best and develop their own creative voice. Through our core values of affinity, aspire and achieve, pupils build a sense of belonging in the creative community, are inspired to aim high in their artistic endeavours and are supported to realise their full potential.
Our Art and design curriculum is based on the Kapow Primary scheme of work, which promotes an appreciation of art as a powerful form of human expression, helping pupils to understand its role across different cultures, time periods and creative industries. The curriculum is designed to be both inclusive and ambitious, ensuring all pupils are equipped to enjoy, create and respond to art in meaningful ways. The aim is to encourage children to value originality, take creative risks and reflect critically on their own work and that of others.
Children develop a sense of belonging through Art and Design lessons by sharing their ideas, learning about a wide range of artists and working together with others. They are given opportunities to make choices in their work, helping them feel more confident and connected to what they create.
We encourage pupils to experiment, take creative risks and use a variety of materials to express their ideas. Children are supported to reflect on their work and celebrate their achievements. Through this, they build confidence, resilience and an enjoyment of art.
Our Art and Design curriculum ensures that all pupils:
-
Generate and develop ideas by drawing on their imagination, observations and experiences
-
Experiment confidently with a wide range of materials, tools and techniques
-
Create original work that expresses their thoughts, feelings and intentions
-
Use visual language (colour, line, shape, texture, form) to communicate meaning
-
Develop technical skills in drawing, painting, sculpture and other media
-
Take creative risks and learn from mistakes as part of the artistic process
-
Reflect and evaluate their own work and the work of others using appropriate vocabulary
-
Understand and appreciate art from different cultures, time periods and traditions
-
Build resilience and confidence in expressing themselves creatively
-
Apply their skills across other areas of learning and real-life contexts
Implementation
At Stock, we follow a combined Art and Design & Technology curriculum, based on the Kapow Primary scheme, alternating each half term. Children take part in weekly lessons lasting around 60 minutes. This structured approach ensures pupils have regular opportunities to develop their skills, explore a range of materials and techniques, and build their creativity progressively across the school.
Art
Stock’s Art and design curriculum is structured around five strands that run through each unit:
-
Generating ideas.
-
Using sketchbooks.
-
Making skills (including formal elements).
-
Knowledge of artists.
-
Evaluating and analysing.
These strands ensure a balanced coverage of the practical, theoretical and disciplinary knowledge pupils need to progress in Art and design, while supporting the development of both creative confidence and critical thinking.
DT
The Design and Technology curriculum is designed to be both accessible and ambitious, ensuring all learners’ full participation and potential achievement. Within the Design and Technology lessons, children:
-
Aspire by thinking creatively and learning about real designers, engineers, and inventors
-
Develop Affinity by enjoying hands-on lessons and understanding how design connects to everyday life
-
Achieve by building skills and knowledge over time and creating high-quality pieces of work
Stock’s Design and technology curriculum is structured around four strands that run through every unit:
-
Design.
-
Make.
-
Evaluate.
-
Technical knowledge.
These strands ensure a balanced coverage of a wide range of skills and knowledge in Design and Technology. They support children in becoming creative, confident problem-solvers who can think carefully about how things work and how to improve them. Over time, children learn how to design and make products that have a clear purpose. As they move through the school, they become more independent and confident in their ideas, skills, and ability to create.
Impact
The impact of our Art and Design curriculum can be seen in the confidence, creativity, and individuality that children develop as they progress through the school. Within the Art and Design curriculum, pupils are inspired to aspire by exploring a wide range of artists, styles, and techniques. They are encouraged to think creatively, experiment with ideas, and see themselves as artists with valuable ideas to share. Pupils also develop a strong affinity for art and design. They enjoy exploring different materials and processes, take pride in their work, and learn to appreciate both their own creations and those of others. Art becomes a subject they are excited to engage with and express themselves through. As a result, pupils are able to achieve well. They build and refine their skills over time, producing thoughtful and purposeful artwork.
By the end of their time at Stock school, pupils leave as creative, confident, and expressive individuals who are well-prepared to continue their artistic journey and who are ready to let their light shine.
